Suran Patties

Moving to the second week of our cooking carnival, I am focusing making kid small meals. The category is snacks but more importantly getting some unfavored veggies into little tummy.

Prior to my blogging days, when I read a million kid specific recipes on Valli's blog I wondered about the focus. My little one was just an infant then so I never really bothered about finding recipes for kids palette. I also fell for the trap when some mothers with elder kids told stories about  - "my kids eat everything I do not bother to make it special for them"

Alas, the reality is when your kid under eats (no matter how much! they always under eat) you do get worked up about what do I feed?

While my little one has been generally okay about eating normal food, it is the quantity that worries me the most. There have been rare moments in life, where kiddo went for a second helping on his own. Off late he asks me things like - what did you add to this? or its so chatpata...I then started using these cues to build some recipes to suit his tastebuds.

My this week's work is basically honoring those moments of satisfaction I got when little fingers reached out for more .

Ingredients
200 gms Elephant foot yam/ Suran
1 tspn ginger paste
1 tspn garlic paste
1 tspn red chilli powder
1 tspn turmeric powder
2 tspn dry mango powder/ amchur
1 tspn garam masala
1 fresh bunch of coriander leaves - finely chopped
2 tbsp rice flour
salt to taste
Oil to cook

Method
1) Peel the yam and wash under running tap water. Pat it dry and chop it up roughly into cubes
2) Pressure cook or boil this yam until it is tender and soft. If your hand itches while handling it, add little oil and salt while cooking.
3) Now let this cool down completely, mash it well. Add all the spices, ginger garlic paste, salt  and coriander and mix well.
4) Now make small patties of the dough and shape as per your liking.
5) Heat a griddle, brush with some oil.
6) Roll each patty into the rice flour for a crispy outer layer. Let it cook until it is crisp and golden.
7) Flip over and repeat the same

Serve with green pudina chutney or tomato ketchup.

Love the theme and your write up.. Valli's blog is one treasure trove only... Great idea to prepare suran patties. Best way to sneak in the yams. :-)
Suran is a yam that I just cannot eat , and if a kiddo ests it then wow ! Though the tikkis sound flavorful .

It is so true about the kid's eating habits these days. My mom swears that neither me nor my siblings never bothered her regarding food in our growing up years. Sneaking suran is a tall order indeed!
I love suran and this is a great way to use it. Love the patties!

This is the most often discussed topic when mommies get together. Can relate to it. My older nephew is such a picky eater and the younger one eats pretty much anything that is served.
