Papdi Chat

Papdi chat is a recent option (by recent i mean about a decade old) to the ever growing list of chat items on the streets of mumbai. To think of it as a snack makes me feel guilty enough to recommend, but having friends who almost every alternate day opt for this, suggests that it is indeed a popular dish. I agree it tastes wonderful but really depends on how it is made. I have tasted versions that make me feel bloated after consuming less than 1/4th of the portion as well as the ones that made me ask for more.
Essentially it is a bhelpuri kind of mixture which only uses the sev puri papdis(flat crispy puri) instead of murmuras( puffed rice).
I made this for evening snacks one day and it ruined the dinner appetite for dear hubby. But I dont think he had any complains. The best part however was that my son also liked it so I believe this will work with kids as well

Ingredients
1 cup crushed papdis
1 onion finely chopped
1 tomato finely chopped
1 potato boiled and finely chopped (roughly mashed)
2 tbsp fresh coriander finely chopped
1 tspn finely chopped green chilly
1 tspn chat masala
a pinch of black salt
a pinch of roasted cumin seeds powder
a pinch of amchur /dry mango powder
Green chutney (Coriander, mint, salt, cumin seeds ground together)
Tamarind chutney (Tamarind pulp, jaggery, roasted cumin seeds, red chilli powder, salt boiled with some water and ground to a paste)
Nylon Sev/ Regular sev to top
Method
1) In a large bowl, add the ingredients in the order listed above while stirring constantly
2) Add the chutneys to form a nice mixture
3) Serve , garnished with sev, coriander

Chaats do fill up our tummies (even big ones like mine :D), its best served around 6:30-7 as an early dinner. My husband washes it down with a glass of buttermilk and he is done with his 'dinner'..
