Dal Pitthi
Once an Irish colleague asked me (this was 4 years back) about a dish which she had tasted at her indian friend's place.
Wheat pasta in lentil broth, can you make it?
Now who knew then that all that she was referring to was nothing but simply daal fala (in marathi, dal dhokli (in gujarathi) or you will see the daal pitthi.
Ingredients
1 cup Arhar dal (Split Pigeon peas)
1 onion finely chopped
1 tomato finely chopped(optional)
1 cup wheat flour
1 tspn red chilli powder
1 tspn garam masala
1 tspn turmeric powder
1/2 tspn mustard seeds
1/2 tspn cumin seeds
a pinch of asafoetida
salt to taste
coriander for garnish
Method
1) Knead the dough using wheat flour, salt and water.
2) Cook the arhar dal with 2 cups of water in a pressure cook.
3) In a large pan, heat some oil, add the mustard seeds, asafoetida and when it splutters add the cumin seeds.
4) Add the onions , saute until the onions are well cooked. Now add the tomatoes and saute until they are well cooked as well.
5) Add all the dry masalas and salt and stir well.
6) Add the mashed dal along with water and let it cook.
7)Now make small dough balls and roll it out to make a puri. Mark 4 edges on the puri and bring it to the centre and pinch it together. This will create a veil like pattern in each corner.
8) Make similar pitthis with the remaining dough.
9) Drop these in the boiling pot of dal. Cook it for about 4-5 min.
10) Garnish with coriander.
To get a better idea of how the pitthi looks, have a closer look.
